3 Ways to Wear Summer Favourites in Winter

Jumper: Topshop (Old but Similar), Shirt: Primark (Old but Similar), Skirt: Marks and Spencer (Old but Similar-ish), Boots: Shoe Zone

There’s something about re-discovering old favourites from the back of the wardrobe/bottom of the draw that I enjoy. These days I shop using the Lucy Siegle method, always asking myself whether I wear things a minimum of 30 times before taking the plunge. To help me apply this method I think of at least 3 outfits I could incorporate the item into – unless it’s something like a good ol’ fancy dress for an occasion which I would happily wear as it is a fair number of times. Another way to ensure that I wear an item more than 30 times is to find a way to take that item from season to season. Here are a few little pointers to take even the most summery of skirts through to autumn and winter.

1. Layer, Layer and then add another Layer

The outfit I’m wearing for this post is a layered combination of some items that have been part of my wardrobe for a hell’uva long time. I blogged about this shirt in the earlier years of my blog and I love the collar as much then as I do now. It adds a little edge to any jumper/shirt combo and is the perfect layering piece for when a jumper alone just won’t cut it.

Wearing a jumper under dresses, playsuit and pinafore dresses is also another layering thing I love to do and pretty much how I survive between November and February in this country. See here, here and here for knits under non-winter pieces.

2. Add Over the Knee Boots

Over the knee boots are something I’m yet to to invest in but I have been lusting over them from afar for the past year. When on the shorter side, as I am, it’s hard to find a pair that don’t cover my entire leg. But when I find that perfect pair I will be teaming them with dresses and skirts to keep those knees toasty.

3. Add Winter Accessorise

With a wooly hat, a faux fur stole and all the possible winter accessorise on offer, an outfit perfect for the warmest day can easily be taken through to December. My favourite accessorise to keep as much heat in as possible is a fedora. I have a black fedora which I dig out every year but ASOS always have a selection of  hat’s I’m forever considering moving from my Saved Items to my virtual basket including a black panama hat with buckles. It might have to be a Christmas present to me..from me.

Here’s a bonus way to keep wearing those summer favourites in winter. Point numero 3.5 if you will.

3.5 Wear that Mulled Wine Blanket

And if all else fails, put on the summer outfit and have a little mulled wine. It is December after all.

I love your rationale – I always try to think about what outfit I could incorporate things into when I go to buy things – I love the idea of only buying it if I think I'm going to wear it 30 times!! Also love these ideas – I like to make sure things I buy go with things I can wear in at least 2 seasons and these are perfect ways to ensure that!! I also love accessorizing outfits in winter with hats and scarves!!

Ah thank you so much – I definitely need to top up on hats and scarfs to keep my summer favourites going on a little longer 🙂 x
